5 Steps to Finding Your Purpose

Your purpose is your calling in life; what you are supposed to be doing. Your purpose gives you validation and once you find it, you cannot see yourself not doing it. You believe in it so wholeheartedly that you would fight for it and you would even do it for free.

“Your main goal in life is to find your purpose and get about the business of fulfilling that purpose.” - Oprah

Now that is great advice, excellent advice actually. But what if we don’t know what our purpose is, or how to find it, or where to even start?

If that is how you are feeling, know that you are not alone. Many of us feel that void or mundane repetitiveness that keeps us questioning our existence. We know that we were put here to answer to a call greater than what we are currently filling our time with.

If you would like help finding your purpose, I have compiled 5 surefire ways to get some clarity into your life.

1. Identify your Passion(s).

Passion is what drives you, motivates you and makes you happy just to do it. Your passion feeds your soul and imagination. Sometimes your passion may take work to do, but it never feels like work because you enjoy it so thoroughly.

Passion sometimes involves or highlights your creativity and skills. Ask yourself the following:

  • What are you good at?

  • What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

  • If you could take an impromptu day off work/school/housework, what would you like to do with your time?

2. Take notice of your Curiosities and allow them to lead you.

If you find yourself being pulled in a certain direction or you feel a fire lit under you when a certain issue is brought up, follow that, explore it and see where it takes you.

3. Dig through your Past, literally!

If you have any old boxes or drawers containing your memories and valuables, dig them out and start sifting through them. Old journals, letters and diaries are gold here. You hung onto all of these things for a reason. They hold clues to what drives you and brings you happiness.

4. Explore your Fantasies.

Ask yourself:

  • What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

  • What would your life be like if money were not an issue?

  • If your life was ending, what would you regret not doing?

  • What do you daydream about but are afraid to tell anyone about?

5. Just Ask!

Ask God, The Creator, Universe (the higher power you place your faith in). When you ask, the answer will be given.

There were many times in my life when I sought out answers for questions. I would pose the question to myself, other people, professionals, etc… But I just couldn’t get myself to the place where I felt confident in the answers I was given and my intuition and logic just would not coincide. I would be just about at my wits end as to which path to follow... and then I would remember, all I have to do is ask. I needed only to surrender my question to the higher power and trust that I would be shown the way. When you have conflicting feelings and you just can’t find the answer within yourself, Ask/Pray/Request that the answer that is right for You, be revealed to you. When all else fails, we still have faith.

So take out a pen and paper, or your favourite journal, or open up a blank notes page on your phone and begin going through all 5 steps. It doesn’t take long and you already hold all the answers, they are just waiting to be unearthed.

And just know this: Your purpose does not have to be complicated. It does not have to be some grand, original, out of this world idea that is going to be magically revealed to you in some dramatic fashion. Your purpose needs only to fulfill the requirements of making you feel good, igniting your passion, and making you smile. Your purpose will keep you wanting more, it will turn hours into minutes and make you feel like you’d love to engage in it all day every day. So be patient with yourself. It may take some time for you to clearly identify your purpose, but if you follow these 5 steps you are well on your way to moving your life in the direction that is right for you.
